altocinco Dining Out: Alto Cinco Is The Best Place For Mexican FoodI love Mexican food. Not the Ortega boxed taco kits, although those are OK in a pinch. I’m talking some real tasty authentic Mexican. Where you get generous portions of rice and beans to accompany your tasty burrito, or heck how about some tostadas? You rarely find the flat tasty treat at the average Mexican joint, and for such a simple dish that’s a travesty. Those of us here in Syracuse have limited choice in Mexican fare. We can enjoy an elegant dinner at The Mission, which I’ve only heard is fantastic. I do have plans to visit soon, as Friday night dinner plans fell though. But there’s one spot in Syracuse for those who are searching for some delicious Mexican.

Johanna Yorke opened Alto Cinco in 1995 to provide the city, and more directly college kids at SU, with fresh food. What you get each time you choose from the extensive menu is something that is clearly cared for and prepared fresh each day. And it’s not about eccentric tastes either. Take the guacamole, which is simplicity at its finest. While I haven’t watched it being prepared I wouldn’t be surprised to discover it consisted of avocado, lime juice and seasoning. It’s also the best guacamole I’ve ever had at a restaurant.

At nearly 30 years old I’m not quite of the typical crowd who goes in to sit and eat at Alto Cinco. The atmosphere is distinctly that of a college joint. But that’s what take out is for, or visiting during the Summer months. The kitchen is open, where those waiting for takeout are literally 2 feet from their food while it’s prepared. The staff is kind and accommodating at all times, and you’ll never find yourself flustered when ordering. This is all the more impressive when you walk into the throng of patrons trying to get at their food, all while the staff swiftly and expertly takes care of each person.

The food itself is incredible, with a quality you’d expect from the home kitchen of a friend’s mom. If you can get them to give you some flour tortillas to snack on do so. They are soft and full of goodness. Alto Cinco doesn’t just serve the tortillas as a way to hold in the stuffing, it’s a part of the meal. And the foundation for a good Mexican feast is the tortilla. From the best fish taco in town to an incredibly accommodating atmosphere Alto Cinco is the best place to satiate your Mexican hunger.

I love Alto Cinco's burritos! Their tortillas aren't those dry and floury ones (yuck) and for me I can still eat them easily. With a worsening medical problem that involves swallowing I find that their food is still something to look forward to! Love their house sauce! I have family that are vegans and an old-fashion hubby (big on meat) and so this is a place that we all can enjoy . Reasonable prices and tummy- filling orders makes me more than happy to travel from Auburn, N.Y. to Westcott St. SMR
