twinkie The 100 Calorie Twinkie Has ArrivedThe next step in the industrial food march known as profit from macronutrients over quality nutritional edibles has begun. In recent years the advent of the 100 calorie snack packs has pervaded all aspects of snacking life. The marketing brilliance of this maneuver by food conglomerates is only slightly less impressive than the super size craze. When Coca Cola and Pepsi figured out they could charge just a little more to sell 20 oz bottles it turned into a money driving machine. Now snack manufacturers have blatantly joined in on the most profitable way to churn out product. Next on the block is Hostess Twinkies, the ultimate in worthless calories.

100 calorie snack packs are dangerous on a lot of levels, not the least of which is intentionally making people think that only getting 100 calories of horrible processed food isn’t that bad. Actually it may even be good. After all, you’re being sensible with your processed food indulging. Right? Meanwhile you’re paying more per ounce for the food this way, and the whole purpose of the industrial food machine is to pour out as many calories as possible for the cheapest price. Now that supposed benefit is under attack.

OK. Perhaps “attack” is melodramatic. But really, this whole situation just curdles my milk. And that’s saying something, because the previous statement obviously makes no sense. Just like it makes no sense to buy the silly 100 calorie snack packs.

The 100 calorie “Twinkie Bites” should be on store shelves now. Go and look, then laugh. But please don’t buy into the marketing hype.
