My twitter feed once again informed me of some news I otherwise would have missed. This time about the closing of the Cook’s Library bookstore in Los Angeles. I’m not a huge fan of bookstores, and while I empathize with the owners of said stores as Amazon slowly puts them out of business I can’t say I’m surprised. After 20 years of operation the store will close its doors on April 30.
I’m not the only one who sees the writing on the wall. Cook’s Library owner Ellen Rose told the LA Times, “Bookstores are suffering. It’s pretty discouraging.” Talking about customers who walk in to get recommendations and then leave to order the book on Amazon. It sucks because for most of us when there’s a continuous 25% or more discount online we can’t really justify spending full price at a mom and pop shop.
For loyal fans of the Cook’s Library the additional cost went into the personal reactions you got with staff. Browsing a bookstore itself is far more satisfying an experience than clicking a button on the computer. But those loyal followers aren’t enough to keep a store alive.
Let the Library go out in style. Visit the store if you’re in the area to pay your respects, and finally get those great deals you always hoped for. I want to wish Ellen and her staff the best of luck and thank them for serving their community so well for all these years.
