Chinese chefs have designed a dish that is likely to cause many Westerners to exclaim, “Aw…that poor fishy.” Deep fried carp that is still alive when eaten. Outside of the Western world many cultures eat what we’d consider “weird” food. Sometimes it’s as simple as a whole fish head, or organs we normally toss in the garbage. But every now and then a new delicacy comes to light that is shocking.
The question that people have been asking since this video hit the internet yesterday is whether this practice is cruel. Odori gui (“food that dances”) has been a part of the Chinese diet for a long time, and what this simply is is a new technique to show off the craft. That’s the simple answer as to why this has been done.
So do you think this is an inhumane act, or is it no more cruel than boiling a lobster?
The video below may be too graphic for some readers.
