Haagen-Dazs may sound European but it’s actually an American brand of ice cream. The super premium ice cream maker has announced they have begun reducing the size of their pints from 16oz to 14oz. Starting this month the 32 oz cartons will decrease to 28 oz. So then I guess a pint is not a pint the world around, at least not in faux Euro sounding ice cream maker land. Haagen-Dazs claims the reason for the change is due to increased cost of ingredients and manufacturing.
In Vermont, north of the Brooklyn based Haagen-Dazs, sits Ben & Jerry’s and they don’t like this plan in the least. Heck, according to the B&J’s website they may be more upset by the downsizing than many consumers:
“One of our competitors (think funny sounding European name) recently announced they will be downsizing their pints from 16 to 14 ounces to cover increased ingredient and manufacturing costs and help improve their bottom line. At Ben & Jerry’s we think downsizing pints is downright wrong. We understand that in today’s hard economic times businesses are feeling the pinch. We also understand that many of you are also feeling the same, and think now more than ever you deserve your full pint of ice cream.”
