Since I became an alcohol imbibing adult Sierra Nevada Pale Ale has been a staple of my beer diet. The ale is one of four year-round offerings by the brewery: Porter, Wheat and Stout being the others. Like Sam Adams and other major craft breweries Sierra Nevada has continuously provided seasonal brews. I’m not a huge fan of the seasonal stuff, although I do prefer Sam Adams’ Winter Ale over the Summer. Fruity beers just annoy me, let that just be said.
Sierra Nevada has announced that they are going to finally offer a new entrant into the year-round choice with Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA. Huh? That doesn’t sound like a brew that is part of the classic annals of beerdom. Besides the thing I’ve always liked about Sierra Nevada is there is a real basic quality to their beer. A SN Pale Ale isn’t going to wow you all that much, which makes it the perfect beer to have on hand for sipping during a game of Left 4 Dead.
I have no idea what the new Torpedo tastes like as the company plans to release it to shelves sometime in early 2009. But Sierra Nevada is just behind Sam Adams as the powerhouse in craft beers in America, so they could make this work. Then again I also ignore their other choices. If I’m drinking a stout it should at the very least be a Guinness. The guys at the phenomenally titled BeerNews.org have the lowdown on Torpedo Extra IPA.
