Wegmans has recently introduced a new line of all natural soups. Normally store bought canned and boxed soups are the reason people don’t like soup. They’re too salty or sweet. The fresh taste of a homemade soup is naturally lost in the industrial mass production of the product. But on a recent shopping trip Wegmans was handing out small cups of hot Cream of Mushroom that I tried and thought wasn’t too horrific. So I bought the butternut squash soup to try. more…

There is no real American cuisine. This is what I’ve heard from numerous people, and when I say that there is I’m challenged to provide examples. Well, instead of just listing off something like cioppino this time around I’d back up my assertion that America has great original cuisine by making a classic myself. more…
I’ve long been a fan of fennel. Freshly cut fennel in a salad is such a great thing that I can’t see any home going without. So when walking through Wegmans this week I couldn’t resist buying just one fennel bulb. I had no idea what it would be used for, but there it was and I had to have it. more…
If you’ve been to a grocery store in New York anytime recently you may have come across some people looking for you to sign a petition. The idea represented by the Vote Wine 2009 coalition was to allow grocery stores to sell wine. A notion I don’t find all that abhorrent really. But I also don’t see a need when I’ve got access to 2 or 3 liquor shops that are decent, and one fantastic one that’s only a 10 minute drive away. more…
Walking around Wegmans today after my daily workout I noticed they now had organic grass fed beef for sale. So far I’ve been unable to fully jump on this bandwagon because of the need to visit a farm and buy half a cow. Without hesitation I decided to grab a sirloin and see if it’s worth the extra cost. In essence it is absolutely worth it. Put aside any eco or animal friendly motives you may hear about, grass fed beef just tastes beefier. Not necessarily better, but it’s distinctly more robust in its beefy flavor. more…
The gracious acknowledgment on the King Arthur Flour blog does little to assuage my wonderment at the parting of ways between the now venerable flour maker and Trader Joe’s. It’s with little difficulty I understand TJ’s desire to sell its own brand of products, which apparently now includes flour. But why absolve the longstanding relationship? A relationship that ostensibly brought King Arthur Flour to the national stage. more…
Starbucks is getting into the breakfast deal game. The coffee conglomerate has long offered sickly sweet pastries, and let’s not forget their forgettable parfaits, for years now. But starting March 3rd for $3.95 you’ll be able pick up a tall latte and oatmeal, a latte with a slice of reduced-fat cinnamon swirl coffee cake, or drip coffee with a breakfast sandwich. more…
Adam Roberts is the amateur gourmet. Not to be confused with me, an amateur gourmet. It’s all in the article. Never mind that for now, Adam has recently posted an interesting piece about the Key Food near his place. Key Food is a grocery store, as will become apparent when you head on over to read his commentary. While you’re at it, have a look around. Adam is a top notch food blogger and you should add him to your Reader. more…
Are there things you think about that you wonder if anyone else has the same thoughts? I ran into such a situation this morning at the store. After dropping my wife off at work I had to make a run to the store to pick up a book for her, and I got myself a nice shiny new Blu-ray copy of The Mist. Because Wegmans is near the local Target I decided to stop in and grab a couple of items for dinner tonight. Once again I’ll be cooking at work and listen, our food can be decent but it gets tiresome. more…
